Matera 2019

It’s a story starting with grains of wheat and ending with a fragrant loaf. Breadway is an immersive experience which takes place in the Piccianello district in Matera, in its bread-making streets.

For Matera’s residents it’s a packed programme of entertainment, story-telling, workshops and artistic installations about breadmaking, to discover local customs and traditions.

For ADI – Associazione per il Disegno Industriale Delegazione di Puglia e Basilicata and the Facoltà di Scienze Biotecnologiche dell'Università degli Studi di Bari 'Aldo Moro', it’s an opportunity to explore the development of different forms of bread and the ways Italian and European regional societies and cultures have reinvented them, drawing on a strong artisan tradition and the concept of food in continual evolution.

More importantly, for the working group it’s time to imagine the future of bread as a starting point for a shared identity. At the end of the journey, the vision is transformed into a design for a completely new shape of bread.

For everyone, visitors and protagonists at Matera 2019, Breadway is a new European bread, a concrete sign of an informed community, of a custodian capable of creating ideas and flavours that are always different, and which can continue to give us the nutrition we need.
